Visit to Buddhist Sculpture Studio [8月 03,2015 ]
On July 7 we, the members of the Practical Japanese Course, visited a Buddhist sculpture studio, “Seizan-sha,” in Shiga prefecture. Mr. Watanabe Seizan, the Great Buddhist sculptor of the studio, gave us explanations on general topics of making Buddhist statues and after that we looked around his studio rooms. This time we listened to detailed explanations about “Urushi” (lacquer), “Kin-paku” (gold-leaf), and paints, as well as woods for making statues. We could see a staff member doing ‘Kirikane’ (decoration by gold leaf cutting), as in the past visits. We were lucky to see various types of statues this time, as there are more statues left in the studio than before.
