Experiencing a Kyogen play [1月 18,2019 ]
On January 8th, 2019, we were grateful to invite professional kyogen performers Mr. Hidekazu Yamamoto and Mr. Shinya Izumi as our lecturers, who helped our students get a firsthand glimpse of kyogen in the seminar. This special seminar was held in CJLC Hall for the 77 Maple students as part of their course “Special Seminar on Japanese Language and Culture.”
In the beginning of the seminar, Mr. Yamamoto explained to the students the basics of kyogen: for example, slowly speaking to the person in far distance in a loud voice.
Then, Mr. Izumi taught the students how to laugh or drink using a fan in a kyogen way, and the students themselves tried the movement.
After that, the students enjoyed the chance to actually watch the kyogen program “Bonsan” performed by the lectures.
At the end of the seminar, we had a Q&A session and the students asked the lecturers various questions as to how to express emotion or hide oneself using Kimono, for example.
